Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FT1, Compact Digital Camera

Panasonic has launched the DMC TS1 (DMC-FT1 in europe), its first rugged compact digital camera and the world’s first to feature AVCHD lite HD video recording. The TS1 is designed to be dustproof, waterproof up to 3 meters and shockproof up to 1.3 meters. It incorporates AVCHD Lite video compression in 3 quality levels to allow longer HD video recording. A Wind Cut function helps block out background wind noise during video recording. Sporting a 12.1MP sensor, 28-129mm equivalent lens and 2.7″ LCD, the camera also includes features such as Intelligent Auto Mode, Optical Image Stabilizer and Face recognition.

For a camera that can cope with everything you throw at it, from a pool party to a safari, the FT1 is rather good at its job. Expect excellent quality HD video and great photos, if you can look past the slightly slow performance times.

Other features of the Lumix DMC-TS1 include:

• Bundled Software: The latest version of PHOTOfunSTUDIO 3.0 HD Edition allows users to view, edit and archive captured content with greater ease and fun. Still and motion images can be transferred to the computer via a USB cable for viewing and archiving. Using PHOTOfunSTUDIO 3.0 HD Edition, users can edit and remove unwanted portions of video clips recorded in AVCHD Lite. Contents recorded in AVCHD Lite can be burned directly onto a DVD disc or converted to MPEG2 format. The software also incorporates the Face Recognition function, which recognizes registered faces in photos stored on the computer, making organizing and archiving photos with a specific person much easier. Overall

We really liked using the TS1 (FT1). As an everyday camera it’s perhaps a little too bulky and cumbersome, but for underwater

and shockproof purposes, it’s the best on the market so far. We’ve still yet to test the Canon PowerShot D10, and while it will present some stiff competition, the excellent video implementation on the TS1 is just too good to pass up – for now.
